How to be successful – in life and in running.

I did a talk at RunningWorks with a good friend of mine about being successful, how to be successful, and the road blocks to becoming successful.  We gave the talk to every boy at camp (including a few counselors) and I came away inspired and ready to take on the world.  Below is a brief overview of what we talked about.

What are your goals?  Whether financial, athletically, socially, relationship.  Are you willing to do whatever it takes to reach those goals?  The people who are willing have a much greater rate of success than those who won’t.

When you want to succeed (in whatever it may be) as bad as you want to breathe, THEN you’ll be successful.  A lot of say we want to be successful; say we want happiness, but we don’t really want it that bad.  We just kinda want it.

Our generation is a becoming lazy and unmotivated.  Those who can avoid those pitfalls are the ones who will be successful.  Ask yourself these questions:

  • Who do you see that’s “doing it right”?
  • What are they doing that you aren’t?
  • What can you do to close that gap?

If you’re just going through the motions, you’ll waste your time and have to revisit your efforts at some other time.  To really save time,  do whatever “it” is correctly the first time. It takes longer to fix your mess ups and mistakes than to do it right the first time

Regardless of what you want to be successful in, be aggressive. Be persistent. Be willing to get what you deserve through SACRIFICE!  Be able at any moment to drop everything and focus your attention on what is important. Don’t waste a single minute doing anything that doesn’t bring you closer to success.

What’s the worst that can happen? FAILING? Great!  You now know what doesn’t work.  Move on to something that does with the knowledge of what doesn’t.  The great quote of “Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, an hour, a day, a year. But eventually it will subside” fits perfectly here.

At the end of the day, have you given it everything you’ve got?  If so, you’re on the right path.
