July 4th 5k Racing

Tis the morning of the 4th of July, which means, like many of you as well, Iโ€™m about to leave for my road race.

While I know not everyone races today, a good majority of us do.

On this particularly warm summer morning, here are the things Iโ€™m doing to get myself ready to run a race. And again, maybe you arenโ€™t racing, but youโ€™re just going for a run. Most of the same tactics will apply.

If youโ€™re looking for more guidance on racing, training structure, or motivation, Iโ€™ve got you covered. Sign up for a coaching plan or in-person session today. Letโ€™s make this your best season ever.

  • Hydrate, but not just today, all through the week.
  • Stay out of the sun as much as possible.
  • Abbreviate my warmup run before the race. We donโ€™t need as much when it is hot out. Instead of a normal 3 miles before a 5k, Iโ€™m planning on 12 minutes of easy running, 2 x 60-90 second โ€œpickupsโ€, and then another 3-4 minutes of easy running.
  • Bring extra frozen water bottles to cool my core temperature down pre-race.
  • I know we have a โ€œtowelโ€ that you can freeze, which helps cool you down, that Iโ€™m going to find as soon as Iโ€™m done writing.
  • Keep my foot off the gas. Iโ€™m feeling good and my workouts are trending in the correct direction, but that doesnโ€™t mean I need to go all-in for this. I have two 1-mile races in the next week, so I donโ€™t want all my eggs crushed in one basket.
  • Continue to focus on the big picture. For me, that is staying healthy and getting fit. I want to fit in some triathlon races, and Iโ€™m also targeting my sub-5-minute mile attempt.

Okay friends. I want to thank you all for reading. You keep me motivated and writing – even when itโ€™s tough to write or I donโ€™t have anything great to say.
