I’ve now been blogging once a week for over a year, and to celebrate, I’m sharing the best of the blog posts I’ve written on TrainwithMarc since this site launched back in late 2012.
Writing does not come natural for me. I’d prefer to be talking running with other people, rather than writing about it. Why I started to blog back in 2008 is beyond me – but I’ve stuck with it – sometimes writing weekly (as in the last 52+ weeks) and sometimes I wrote only once a summer.
Regardless of how often or why I write, I’m invested now and I’m doing my best to become quicker and more efficient at it. Sounds a lot like running, huh? The more you do it, the better you get, the better you get the more fun it’s supposed to be!
So here goes – the best of various categories of my blog, all in one nice spot!
Best Post of 2019
In this post, I talked about why I thought training for the Atlanta Marathon was pretty special. I no longer had to gut through intense speed session. I didn’t have to worry about delicate screaming calves on repeat 400s.
The marathon distance was definitely different – and I approached it completely different than all the previous training I had done, and to be honest, I couldn’t have asked for a better first marathon experience.
Best Post of 2018
This post was originally supposed to be a guest post for someone else’s blog, but it fell through after I wrote it. As it turned out, a lot of people REALLY liked reading it.
In this post, I talked about the different paces that distance runners know about – tempo, threshold, interval, and speed – and how we can use them to create a well-balanced training plan.
Best All-Time Post
In terms of what this post helps explain (core exercises), it is probably one of the posts I enjoyed writing and updating the most. This post gives me lots of motivation for creating similarly-styled posts. I obviously have to thank my college coach, Marcus O’Sullivan for introducing me to the routine way back in 2003.
As a runner, core literally extended my competitive running career by 5-10 years. Prior to learning core and working on it weekly, I was a flimsy, weak runner. After taking core serious, I saw immediate gains in fitness, injury prevention, and speed.
Best Guest-Post of All-Time
I was really lucky to work with Jon for a year while he was figuring out where he was going to teach. Back in the day, he and I competed against each other at the county and higher level. He is/was a really talented runner in high school and went on to break 14 minutes in the 5k in college.
He wrote about how to mentally prepare for your peak race. It was a really well-written piece and gets tons of views since he wrote it.

Best Injury-Prevention Post
This was partially written by my inability to squeeze my glute muscles during a physio session. At that point, I knew that I had some serious work to do and I set out to formulate a plan to work on my weak butt muscles. I used my wife, a personal trainer to set up a plan of attack and got to it. The results have spoken for themselves: stronger, less injured, and faster.
I knew that writing this post would be a reminder to me, but also serve as warning/advice to those who might also be in the same position as I was in.
Best Workout Post
One of the earliest blog posts I wrote on TrainwithMarc.com and it’s still going strong. I wrote about defining what a tempo run is supposed to be, finding YOUR pace for a tempo, and sustaining the effort (or breaking it up).
I especially like going back into this post – it was written in 2012 – and updating it with new information that I find relevant for the new year. It’s a good sign that so many people read it because I think it explains the nuances of what a tempo run is supposed to look and feel like.
