I really, really like listening to podcasts. I have a variety of genres that I listen to for knowledge, inspiration, tips and storytelling. There’s one that I like just about more than all the others and that’s the podcast by Gary Vaynerchuk.

To summarize what GaryVee’s podcast is all about is pretty simple: work as hard as you’re willing to work. Value your time and energy. Be a good person. Help others.
One thing that has stuck with me from GaryVee is that he’s always saying if you want something done, you just gotta do it. He’d say, “stop f***ing around and just do it.”

That was me for a very long time. I had all these great ideas, but I was trapped on the “what if” treadmill for way too long. One of those ideas was promoting the coaching that I do.
What would people think of me?
And before I knew it, years had gone by and I sat by idly as other coaches started and flourished on Instagram.
The Breaking Point
Late in 2018, during a day trip to a craft festival, I ran into an old high school teammate who was knitting items as a side hustle. One of my first questions I ask her is ‘how is she marketing it?’. I thought out loud to my wife that if Meghan could do this and promote her craft, why the hell couldn’t I? I raced home, opened an Instagram business account and the rest is becoming history.

Similarly, Gary Vee also said to provide value for people. When RunVineland said they were having a road race in Vineland for the first time in a while, I jumped at the opportunity to help them out. I DMed them (Gary Vee says to do en masse) and proposed to write a training plan for their race.
I was stunned at how quickly RunVineland got back to me. We exchanged ideas, settled on what we were both could benefit from the partnership and since then, I’ve been helping them with videos and tips to inspire their audience.

Run the Ave 5k
As part of RunVineland’s efforts, they are hosting a 5k on June 23rd right in the heart of Vineland, NJ. From secondcapitalrunning.com (runvineland’s website) “Landis Avenue is the largest main strip in South Jersey and we want to celebrate it by giving runners and citizens a chance to experience it from a new angle.”
The training plan I created for their beginner runners can be found on their website and downloaded there.

I am also fortunate to be able to offer a free race entry to the race. Here’s what you have to do to get your hands on a free 5k race entry:
- Follow RunVineland on Instagram
- Like Second Capital Running on Facebook
- Follow TrainwithMarc_llc on Instagram
- Like TrainwithMarc on Facebook
- If you win, you must be able to run the race (Vineland, NJ; June 23rd)

It’s super easy to live in the land of “what ifs” just because that’s so comfortable. Congrats on taking that first step and starting an IG account to highlight your coaching.

Sounds like you made the right choice for you! Not always easy to take the leap

Thanks. It was so minor, but I made it into Everest. Since making it, (knock on wood), not a single student has followed me and I’m slowly growing the account.

Yeah, it was way tougher than it should have been – but it’s been done now.

Taking that leap of faith is hard, but always worth it. Even if it fails, you don’t have to live in the world of “what if?”anymore….if it succeeds, all is well.

I still do need to run a race in NJ but I’m not sure when I’m going to get back up there. Hopefully soon!
Congratulations on all your success! You’re living that dream for sure!

That sounds like a great podcast. Sometimes you need to hear some real talk/tough talk. What an exciting partnership with Run the Ave! I have to check my calendar to see if this is something I could do, I’m about an hour away in Philly!

Exactly. It was tough at first, but it’s gotten easier as I’ve gotten further away from the initial shock of it 🙂

Definitely, do. He comes off as tough and raw (he curses a lot), but if you can get past that and listen to a few, he has some amazing content and ideas that are worth listening to.

Good for you for taking the leap! Promoting yourself is a really important part of business but it can feel odd at first like you’re bragging about yourself. But you really can’t succeed without doing it..

Recently started listening to a lot of Gary’s stuff. Initially I was a bit sceptical about him but have now completed changed my mind as I realise he talks a lot of sense.
