Get In Shape

Getting back into running shape is a tough task.  There are a few things that we can do after a long lay-off that can really help though.  Here they are:

1.  Go slow.  When in doubt, slow down your pace.  The effort it takes to run at your “normal” pace is much harder than when you’re in shape.  So slow down and live to tell another day.

2.  Let yourself recover.  Sure, you’re used to running 6 days a week.  But that was before your break.  Now you should think about 4 days and ease back to 5 days before ramping up to 6 days.

3.  Diversify.  Just as you should with your money, you should when you’re getting back in shape.  Swim, bike, elliptical, practice yoga, go for a hike…  Whatever it is that you do that helps pump that heart more often will help you ease back into shape.

4.  Be patient.  It is not going to happen over night, no matter how much you try.  So be patient.  See the big picture.  It’ll be worth it when you’re flying by your old self!
